NASA App for iPhone

MissionFeedsImages

The New Media Team at NASA Ames Research Center has developed the first NASA iPhone application to deliver up-to-the-minute NASA content directly from Agency sources in one easy-to-use mobile platform. The software makes extensive use of built-in iPhone features and usability to offer NASA information in a clear and intuitive way. The application aggregates and delivers a compelling range of dynamically updated information, images and video links. The NASA App is available free of charge on the App Store from Apple directly to the iPhone and iPod Touch or within iTunes.

The Durand-Lesley Propeller Collection

propellers

The Durand-Lesley propellers in the Engineering Library are the surviving artifacts of a famous experiment in early aviation history which defined a process method in engineering research still in use today.

The work created a comprehensive methodology that was widely used by engineers but little studied by historians, until Walter G. Vincenti wrote about it as a case study in his book, “What Engineers Know and How They Know It: Analytical Studies from Aeronautical History” (1993).

The Durand-Lesley propeller studies at Stanford were an attempt to determine the best performance of various propeller shapes by systematically altering parameters over the course of the experiments. The variable parameters were the five qualities that defined the shape of propeller blades, and two others - the speed of the airstream and the speed of propeller rotation.

Aero/Astro alumnus one of 9 new astronauts

NASA has chosen Michael S. Hopkins, an alumnus of the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics, to be one of its newest astronauts. Of the nine-member class, two others are also alumni of Stanford University. NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program

The NASA Aeronautics Scholarship Program, which is administered by the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) is officially accepting applications for the 2010 Aeronautics Scholarship Program. It is expected that approximately 20 two-year undergraduate, and 5 two-year with an option of a third year graduate scholarships will be awarded annually to students pursuing aeronautical engineering and related fields such as Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Physics and Mathematics.

NASA Seeks Undergraduate Students to Defy Gravity for Engineering and Science

NASA is offering undergraduate students an opportunity to test experiments in microgravity aboard NASA's reduced gravity aircraft.

The opportunity is part of NASA's Reduced Gravity Education Flight Program, which gives aspiring explorers a chance to propose, design, and fabricate a reduced-gravity experiment. Selected teams will test and evaluate their experiment aboard NASA's reduced-gravity airplane. The aircraft flies about 30 roller-coaster-like climbs and dips during experiment flights to produce periods of weightlessness and hypergravity ranging from 0 g to 2 g.

World's first fuel cell aircraft takes off in Germany

Antares DLR-H2
The world's first piloted aircraft capable of manned flight using only power from hydrogen fuel cells took off in Germany Tuesday. Developed by the German Aerospace Center, the Antares DLR-H2 is based on the Antares 20E motor glider with a wingspan of 20 meters, it has a range of 750 km and can currently reach speeds up to 170 km/hr.

"The fuel cell is slung under the left wing and the hydrogen tank under the right wing – with a capacity of either 2 or 4.9 kilograms. The fuel cell system used to power the Antares delivers up to 25 kilowatts of electrical power, and when flying in a straight line, the aircraft only requires about ten kilowatts of power. In this situation, the fuel cell is operating at an efficiency level of approximately 52 percent."

Using a small balloon and a digital camera, teens snap images of space

Photo: METEOTEK IES LA BISBAL SCHOOL via FLICKR

Using only a digital camera, some sensors, and a large helium balloon, a group of high school students from IES La Bisbal school in Catalonia, Spain were able to capture photos of earth and space up to nearly 100,000 feet. They had hoped to reach only 30,000 ft. Using an onboard radio receiver the team was able to track the balloon's progress on Google Earth.

Materials and Aircraft Information AA

Online sources of material property information provide interactive tools to discover the mechanical, thermophysical, electrical properties of alloys, composites, ceramics adhesives and others:

  • Aerospace Structural Materials Database (ASMD)
The ASMD was developed by CINDAS LLC and is provided through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) with the United States Air Force. The database contains approximately 80,000 data curves on over 200 alloys used in the aerospace and other industries. This is the new web version of Aerospace Structural Metals Handbook (ASMH)

  • Thermophysical Properties of Matter Database (TPMD)
The TPMD contains thermophysical properties of over 5,000 materials with approximately 50,000 data curves. This is the searchable, electronic version of the Thermophysical Properties of Matter, the TPRC data series. In this new web-based format, the database is continually updated and expanded.

Online sources of aircraft information on structure, engines and avionics provide detailed manufacturer information, specifications and photographs:

  • Flight Global
Flight Global group's motto is "serious about aviation", and it shows on their homepage, where visitors can find over thirteen sections dedicated to air transport, helicopters, training, and spaceflight. The more casual user may just wish to click on a few of the "Latest News Headlines", but dedicated aeronautics devotees may wish to sign up for their e-newsletter and their RSS feed. Moving down the site's homepage, visitors can cruise on in to the "What's Hot" area and the "Jobs" section, which might be useful for future members of a flight crew or those looking to make a more dramatic career change.

  • JANE’S All the World’s Aircraft (AWA)
Jane’s All the World’s Aircraft provides technical detail on over 950 civil and military aircraft currently being produced or under development by more than 550 companies. Complete with photographs and line drawings to aid recognition and comparison. Each entry contains key specifications for any aircraft, including dimensions, performance, structure, landing gear, power plants and armaments. This is the web version of the print resources and covers 5 years of data. To search, use the tab labeled Janes' reference.

  • JANE’S Avionics
Jane’s Avionics contains detailed information on airborne electronic equipment for both military and civilian aircraft. Each Entry is arranged by country of manufacture and contains information on function, development history, technical description, specifications, operational status and contractor, supplying detailed system assessment. Color images are used wherever relevant to facilitate quick assimilation and comparison of important design and layout characteristics. This is the web version of the print resource and is updated continually. To search, use the tab labeled Janes' reference.
