Today our intern Crystal Rangel began processing the digital media in the Lynn Hershman Leeson collection. This collection documents the work of the American artist and filmmaker Lynn Hershman and contains approximately twenty 3 1/2" diskettes and a single one hundred megabyte Zip Disk. Crystal has generated tracking sheets for each of the diskettes using Metadata Toolkit XForm. The tracking sheets contain a unique identifier, a local identifier and a brief title. They are primarily used to generate unique filenames for each image and for tracking of the digital forensic imaging process. After the tracking sheets were created and printed Crystal began using the ImageTool.exe forensic imaging software that comes with the CatWeasel to forensically image each of the diskettes. During this process roughly half of the diskettes reported errors during the imaging process. I need to do more research on what is causing the problem but suspect that the errors result from data deterioration of the disk sector resulting in the software reporting a hash error. Tomorrow Crystal and I will be looking into these errors more closely and testing the problematic diskettes with different software and a different 3 1/2" drive.
