Visitor Information

Guidelines

The primary purpose of the Stanford University Libraries is to serve the academic and research needs of the faculty, students and staff. Persons not currently members of the Stanford community may also use some of the Libraries’ collections and facilities. Visitors must agree to voluntarily yield to the needs of our primary clientele when necessary, particularly when the library is very busy.

For Alumni
Members of the Stanford Alumni Association have access to selected online databases through their SAA membership. These are not the same databases as the library subscriptions. Access to library subscribed databases is on the same footing as any member of the general public. For wireless access members of the Stanford Alumni Association (SAA), can call (650) 725-0692 and ask for a guest sponsorship to use the wireless network on campus. A guest account allows the guest only to connect a wireless computer to the wireless network and provides no other network rights or services. For questions about SAA Membership and using online databases, please contact the Alumni association at: membership@stanfordalumni.org or phone (650) 725-0692

For Other Visitors
Visitors to Stanford with no affiliation to the University may visit the campus branches of the library for a limited number of times. Following the allotted number of visits (7), visitors may decide to purchase further access privileges. In addition, they may opt to purchase borrowing privileges. Stanford Libraries are not intended to function as a primary resource for information professionals or others working on a contract basis for business firms and individuals. If you require access to databases and other resources for such work on a regular basis, you should plan to subscribe to them yourself. BORROWING CARDS are arranged through the Privileges Desk at Green Library. The Terman Engineering Library cannot issue borrowing cards. For more information on access and borrowing material, click to: http://www-sul.stanford.edu/how_to/borrow_get_access/non_stanford_users/index.html

PLEASE SIGN SIGN OUR GUEST BOOK when you visit the Engineering Library.

Though some of our collection is readily available in open stacks, the items in the SearchWorks online catalog which list “SAL3” as their location need to be paged from our off campus storage facility using the links in SearchWorks. Requests submitted before noon, Monday through Friday, will usually be available for pick up after 10:00 p.m. on the NEXT business day. To prevent unnecessary trips and minimize frustration, please check the online catalog SearchWorks before making a trip to campus in order to request any items you need which are no longer on the local shelves before coming to the library.

Excluded Services
Visitors may not use the Reserve Collections, Interlibrary Loan Services, and databases or online book and journal resources if use is restricted to Stanford faculty, students, and staff. Wireless Access is not offered to visitors other than Alumni (see above). Library staff are not authorized to sponsor guest accounts for library visitors. Visitors can check to see whether they fall under any of the conditions for guest access described here: https://www.stanford.edu/group/networking/cgi-bin/wirelessguest/accounts

Before You Arrive
First check our hours at: https://lib.stanford.edu/englib The Terman Engineering Library offers as large a portion of the collection online as possible so that more library space is available for group and individual study. As a result older print material formerly on the shelves may now be at the Stanford Auxiliary Library 3 (SAL3). Items shelved at SAL3 can be requested to return to campus for your use, see instructions above. This takes 1-2 working days. The item can then be checked out by those with privileges, or retained in the library for use over multiple days as requested. If you need assistance, please e-mail us: engreference@stanford.edu To prevent unnecessary trips and minimize frustration, check the online catalog first in order to request any items you need which are no longer on the local shelves before coming to the library. http://searchworks.stanford.edu For more about the library check our special page.
