Course Reserves are items which are in high demand for a particular course. Falconer Library provides reserve services for the Department of Biology and for selected courses in Psychology, Applied Physics, Neurobiology, and the Program in Human Biology. Most Human Biology course reserves are at the Green Library.
FOR STUDENTS
To determine location(s) of reserve materials, you may (1) search the Course Reserves Catalog, (2) consult your class syllabus, (3) consult CourseWork, or (4) examine the reserves list at Falconer's circulation desk.
Present a valid Stanford ID to use materials. In general, reserve materials circulate for two hours and may NOT be taken out of the library.
Because ready and equal access to reserve materials is critical to the academic enterprise, a stiff fine is assessed for keeping a reserve item beyond its loan period. The fine rate for overdue reserve items is $1.00 per hour. The maximum fine is $30. After 3 days, a bill for replacement costs, a $5 overdue fee and the maximum fine will be assessed. The replacement fee will be waived once the book is returned, but the $30 and $5 fines will remain on your user record. We need and appreciate your prompt response in helping make reserve items available to your colleagues.
FOR INSTRUCTORS
Please submit your course reserve requests using Stanford University Libraries Course Reserve Request form, or bring requests to the library in person. Please allow adequate time for processing items for reserve before they are needed for your class. While some items may already be in the library, others may need to be recalled or purchased. All copies owned by Falconer will be placed on reserve. Please let us know if copies held by other Stanford libraries are needed.
Before each quarter, a letter calling for reserve items is sent to instructors along with a list of items previously placed on reserve. To expedite requests, amend the old list and provide complete bibliographic citations for new items before returning the list to Falconer Library. You may need to obtain copyright clearance for photocopies before we can place them on reserve for you.
Course Reserves can take many formats:
E-Reserves: The library encourages the use of e-book reserves whenever possible. We will search all of the library licensed content sources for e-book versions of the books you want to place on reserve and notify you when we find matching titles.
Links to electronic copies of articles and e-books can be included in your CourseWork sites. A Librarian Role is available in CourseWork to facilitate the addition of library licensed electronic content to your site by library staff. If you wish to have us add reserve items to your CourseWork site please add Courtney Welborn (SUNet id: cwelborn) AND Zeynep Buyukonal (SUNet id: zeynepb) as participants to your site and check the Librarian Role option after you add their SUNet ids. Once included they can add a folder to the Materials section of your site with links to the articles and e-books. A link to your Socrates Course Reserve page will be automatically added to your Coursework site in the Materials section. The folder will be named !Library Materials on Reserve. SearchWorks is the new Stanford on-line catalog, but reserves lists still show up in Socrates.
For more information on the Librarian Role, contact the CourseWork Team (by using the “Contact Us (HelpSU)” link found at the bottom of any CourseWork page) or contact the Falconer Biology Library. We'll be happy to assist you.
Print Books not owned by Stanford: It takes an average of six weeks to order, receive, and process print books that are not in our collection before we can add them to the reserve section. We will also search all of the library licensed content sources for e-book versions of the books you want to place on reserve.
Journal articles: We will place on reserve up to five photocopies of a copyrighted article.
Personal copies of books, videos, CD's or DVD's, as well as homework sets, sample tests/exams, course notes: Please attach a note with the instructor's name and campus address so items may be returned at the end of the quarter. Copies of homework sets, course notes, case studies, etc. should be clearly labeled as such.
Contact Falconer Library (falconerlibrary@stanford.edu, 723-1528) for assistance.
