The Music Library does not impose limits on the number of items you may borrow; My Account will list all of the items and due dates charged to you. Borrower beware!
Green Media & Microtext policies may be viewed here.
Renewals & returns
Sound and video recordings may be renewed once only.
Renewal of loans is permitted if no holds or recalls have been placed. Renew using My Account.
Please return music media directly to the Circulation Desk; use the book drop outside the Music Library entrance for books and scores.
Please be sure all instrumental parts, sound discs, accompanying booklets, etc. are present. Items returned incomplete cannot be discharged until all parts are present, and overdue fines and/or replacement costs will be billed accordingly.
Fines & fees
See SULAIR Circulation Policies about: fees & fines, ID cards, renewals, recalls, overdue bills, blocks, borrower disclosure, liability, and more.
See My Account for titles you have charged out, fines owed, bills paid and unpaid, and the status of holds and recalls.
Courtesy overdue reminders are sent via email. Failure to receive such a reminder is not considered grounds for reduction or cancellation of fines. Patrons who borrow vast amounts of material may wish to consult My Account on a regular basis.
Media fines:
For each barcoded item (including CD booklets): The Music Library does not charge a daily overdue fine. However, on the 7th day overdue you are billed the standard replacement cost plus a $5.00 processing penalty. The $5.00 penalty remains after the item is returned or replaced. Pay bills at the Green Library Loan Desk.
On order, in process

On order
Items listed in Socrates as being "on order" have not yet been received by Stanford Libraries. You may request notification of an "on order" item through Socrates, and we will let you know when it is ready for use. Please note, however, that we can't predict the length of time it will take for a specific item to arrive; if you are facing deadlines you may wish to explore Inter Library Loan options.
In process
Items listed in Socrates as being "in process" have been received by Stanford Libraries but have not yet been fully cataloged, bound, stamped, or have not yet reached their shelving location. "In process" Music Library scores, recordings and videos are available for use in the library; please ask at the Circulation Desk. Patrons may also place a request through Socrates to have items processed for borrowing and to be notified when they are ready. Although requests are processed as quickly as possible, it may take some time if items require binding.
Interlibrary Services & RLCP
Borrowing from other institutions
See the Interlibrary Services Document Delivery page for details on borrowing from other libraries.
Faculty, academic or professional staff, and currently registered graduate students at Stanford, UC Berkeley, and UT Austin are eligible for Research Library Cooperative Program (RLCP) privileges.
Stanford faculty, academic or professional staff, and currently registered graduate students can also borrow library materials when visiting UC Berkeley; UC Berkeley card holders may enjoy reciprocal privileges when visiting Stanford.
Visit UC Berkeley's Jean Gray Hargrove Music Library page.
Borrowing from Stanford (by non-Stanford researchers)
All requests must originate from your home institution and be sent to the Interlibrary Services Office. See Interlibrary Lending for details.
Independent researchers are required to submit requests through their local public library; the Music Library cannot lend materials directly to independent researchers other than those who have purchased borrowing privileges. Dissertations & theses
To view:
Stanford Music doctoral dissertations, D.M.A final projects, and other student-authored work can be found in Socrates under the author/composer’s name. Many are shelved in the stacks, but an increasing number are stored off-site. You may also browse by call number in Socrates:

ML29.2 M.A. projects (and occasional theses)
ML29.3 Senior Honors projects

These items may be borrowed by Stanford faculty and graduate students for a limited loan period (7 days).
Preservation copies of D.M.A. final projects and Doctoral dissertations are housed in the Stanford University Archives.
Non-Stanford dissertations owned by the Music Library can be found in Socrates with an author/title search. They are shelved in their appropriate subject areas.
To purchase:
The UMI Dissertation Publishing service offers Stanford dissertations for sale (as well as those from other institutions). Stanford University does not provide dissertations for direct sale.
ProQuest's Dissertations&Theses@Stanford provides free downloading of Stanford dissertations (1989-) for Stanford University users.
Dissertations submitted by other American and Canadian universities can be searched in ProQuest's Dissertations & Theses database and copies may be purchased online by individual researchers.
A Socrates search for the title “Doctoral dissertations in music” will provide a list of print indexes to aid in searching for music dissertations.
To borrow:
Stanford borrowers may request dissertations not owned by SULAIR through the Interlibrary Services Office. Please use the online book request form. Keep in mind that individual institutions set their own policies for what types of materials may be borrowed.
Independent (non-Stanford) researchers, please note:
Stanford doctoral dissertations (post-1953) do not circulate via interlibrary loan services except to RLG ShaRes members or University of California libraries. Requests must originate from your home institution. See the Interlibrary Services Lending page for details.
Stanford doctoral dissertations in music (post-1953) may be purchased through UMI's Dissertations and Theses service. Stanford does not provide copies for direct sale.
