The latest free download from Classical Music Library is Samuel Barber’s Nuvoletta, op. 25, for soprano and piano, performed here by Ann Murray and Graham Johnson. It was composed in 1947 as Barber was preparing for the premiere of Knoxville, Summer of 1915, with the soprano Eleanor Steber. Steber was then one of the first sopranos to present this theatrically-demanding work in recital. The text is excerpted from Joyce’s Finnegan’s Wake, where the daughter (Nuvoletta-Isabel-Issy) plays out one of her death scenes. While Barber enjoyed setting Joyce’s imaginative and colorful phrases, he later admitted in a 1978 interview that even he didn’t fully understand them.
