The Libraries received from Camille D. and Dominique Samuels a gift of a collection to be known as the “Camille Chautemps Papers”. The archive consists of diaries, correspondence, photographs and other personal and miscellaneous papers relating to Camille Chautemps’ private and public life ranging from the 1920s to his death in 1963. Chautemps held several positions in the Radical Socialist Party and was four times Premier in the Third Republic during the period of the Popular Front and was also Vice Premier in the Vichy Government at the start of World War II. He broke with the Petain government in 1940, left France and lived the rest of his life in the United States.
