Books24x7, IT Pro site license upgrade.
The IT Pro collection of Books24x7 is comprised of popular computer technical books from a variety of well-known commercial and academic publishers. This continuously growing collection currently contains 20,000 titles (up from 1800 in 2002), focusing on practical books covering computer-related topics, including computer applications, programming, computers and society, and e-commerce. An independent editorial board of professionals from computer-related fields advises Books24x7 on content selection and topic coverage. Books24x7 and Safari Tech Books Online together help satisfy the need for computer books and manuals that have a relatively short shelf life but are in great demand by a broad range of users in the campus community to support their research and continuing education, as well as make many more copies available than normally would be otherwise. As of September 2008 access to this resource was expanded from a 3 simultaneous-user limit to an unlimited number of Stanford users.
Safari Tech Books Online, complete collection upgrade.
Similar to Books24x7, Safari Tech Books Online includes books relating to computing and information technology from major technical publishers. However, until August 2008 the library had chosen to only subscribe to selected titles published by O’Reilly, making approximately 280 titles available to the Stanford community. The print copies of these technical guidebooks, known for the distinctive black-and-white illustrations of animals on their covers, are very popular and are heavily used. Now the entire collection of over 6100 books from multiple publishers is available to users, covering networking, programming, and security as well as other computing topics, with more titles added as they become available. This complements the online collection available from Books24x7, which does not include books from the O’Reilly imprint. The full-text search capability (including snippets of computer code) in Safari enable users to locate only those sections of the books they need at their desktop at any time of day, making these books available to more people than if the library relied solely on print copies.
