Come to the Library Open House on Tuesday, October 9!

Don't forget that the Library Open House is on Tuesday, October 9 from 1 p.m. - 4 p.m.

Again, we are asking all library staff to consider yourselves as co-hosts of the Library Open House. green_lib_drawing_sml2012.jpgAs you visit the various tables and displays at the Open House, please take the initiative to greet students and faculty, answer their questions, and guide them towards the exhibits of interest to them. This is the perfect time and venue to put your concierge skills in action.

As good hosts, please remember that the limited number of drawing prizes and giveaways are intended for our guests and patrons.

To entice the passers by, we are extending the boundaries of this year’s Open House. Many of the participants will be stationed outside of the Green Library East entrance, in addition to those located around the lobby and Information Center area. Participants will be highlighting SUL's vast services and resources, and will include most of the campus libraries, Special Collections, Digital Humanities, SUL in Second Life, and many more.

This year, Stanford’s own radio station, KZSU (90.1 FM), will be broadcasting live, featuring some music from our Music Library collections, as well as engaging in live chat sessions. There will be a curated tour of the new exhibit: Scripting the Sacred: Medieval Latin Manuscripts; the newest information/tips on SearchWorks, xSearch, RefWorks, Mendeley, and Zotero will be presented; and the very popular Robotic Book Scanner tours are back. Fun giveaways and a drawing for prizes will round out the event.

Stanford's Digital Language Lab: A Key Resource for Stanford's Foreign Language Program

Stanford University has been named one of the 10 Most Innovative Colleges for Foreign Language Study by TheBestColleges.org. Of particular interest, the article highlights Stanford's Digital Language Lab (DLL), which we all know falls under the auspices of SUL. The article states that the DLL is the go to resource for assessing students’ oral performance, providing resources for online oral assessments and Simulated Oral Proficiency Interviews (SOPIs). Joseph Kautz, Head of the Digital Language Lab, says, "We believe we are number one," but he is just pleased that Stanford is "ranked among some legendary language institutions nonetheless."

New Data Services Web Site Online!

Data Services Web SiteData Management Services is excited to announce the launch of our new web site!

The primary goal of Data Services is to assist Stanford's researchers with the organization, management, and curation of research data. We want to help ensure that Stanford research data is preserved and accessible now and into the future. Our new site will help campus researchers create and carry out a data management strategy that will preserve their valuable research data for future sharing and reuse.

The Data Management Planning Tool (DMP Tool) - available via the Data Services web site - is a quick and easy way for researchers to assemble data management plans for grant proposals. The tool includes up-to-date funder-specific requirements and Stanford-specific guidance, as well as suggested language for those wishing to preserve data in the Stanford Digital Repository.

Visit dataplan.stanford.edu to log into the tool with your SUNet ID. DMPTool workshops will be offered at various sites around campus throughout the fall. Check the Science and Engineering Libraries Training tab in Coursework to see dates, times, and locations. For questions or help, contact data services at ask-data-services@lists.stanford.edu.
