The Complete SMPTE Digital Library Debuts on HighWire

Cross‐platform search functionality is now live on SMPTE's new interactive online library resource.

WHITE PLAINS, NY & STANFORD, CA – September 11, 2012 ‐‐ The Society of Motion Picture and Television Engineers (SMPTE), the worldwide leader in motion‐imaging standards and education for the communications, technology, media, and entertainment industries, is proud to announce the debut of their vibrant new Digital Library on the HighWire Open Platform. library.smpte.org

"We were looking to increase service to our members and the community through this new Digital Library," said SMPTE Executive Director, Barbara Lange. "With our new online presence, we hope also to expand our visibility to those who don't know us well, as we feel that HighWire's close connection to the experts at Google Scholar and widespread use of open linked data will be instrumental in increasing our audience."

The SMPTE Digital Library features new integrated search functionality, allowing users to expand their search across the entire SMPTE Digital Library material. Search results reveal the number of hits, and the source of the information, whether it comes from the Society's Journal, Conference Proceedings or the Standards book content.

"The Society made a great decision to utilize HighWire's future‐focused Open Platform to build their digital library," said HighWire's Director of Publisher Relations, Mark Johnson. "Our platform ensures that SMPTE will enjoy long‐term interoperability as we focus on our own strict use of standards to enhance cross‐publisher discoverability, and offer high‐end products such as mobile and multimedia."

The SMPTE Digital Library provides one‐stop access to SMPTE resources, informing professionals about the latest technology products and industry research as they happen. The SMPTE Digital Library ties together the various elements of the society's products, including the SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal, from 1916 to the present, the Society's conference proceedings, and the full suite of SMPTE standards, recommended practices, and engineering guidelines. SMPTE Motion Imaging Journal is the Society's key publication providing peer‐reviewed articles on topics in 3D, imaging processing, display technologies, audio, compression, digital cinema, and much more.

The use of motion‐imaging technologies continues to move into new applications in the military, healthcare, security, marketing, technology, and other industries. The launch of the SMPTE Digital Library creates a new repository, which will be accessible to SMPTE members and non‐members – as well as academic and corporate librarians – around the world.

GeoScienceWorld Journals Incorporate Mobile Web Format

ALEXANDRIA, VA – September 6, 2012

GeoScienceWorld’s (GSW) online journal collections and portal are now available in a mobile-optimized format with the help of HighWire’s Mobile Web Interface. With average monthly visits to GSW from mobile devices already topping 9,000 hits, creating a version that is designed for advanced searching and browsing on the small screen will improve the experience and workflows for researchers, library patrons, and society members.

Visitors to GSW’s portal pages and the majority of their 41 journals are automatically redirected to the mobile version when accessing the sites on an enabled smartphone. (m.geoscienceworld.org) The content presented on mobile sites is in a format designed specifically for the smaller screen size and functionality of a mobile device. Each of GSW’s mobile journal sites feature the full text of content of the current issue (with user authentication), archives, and tables of contents, in addition to providing search and social bookmarking options. For consistency, the mobile sites maintain the look and feel of the full web versions.

“Research has shown that users highly value the ability to easily access scholarly content wherever they are,” noted Alexandra Vance, Executive Director, GeoScienceWorld. “With HighWire’s mobile technology solution, we’re meeting that demand on behalf of the geosciences community.”

Benefits of the Mobile Web Interface:

  • User experience – specifically designed for handheld devices
  • Optimal download speeds
  • Device agnostic – works on iOS, Android™, Blackberry®, Windows Mobile, web enabled e-readers, etc.
  • Configurable – users can customize their settings and display options
  • Flexible – keep up with the latest research wherever you are
  • Functional – instant search capabilities and intuitive navigation
  • Productive – wireless, mobile web browsing is ubiquitous

“We’re excited that GSW has embraced the HighWire Mobile Solution. The solution provides an easy-to-read option for users on the go,” said Tom Rump, HighWire’s Managing Director. “Mobile technology is another strong piece in the puzzle that allows our affiliated publishers to better reach their intended audience – wherever, and whenever.”
