As I write in this season of painful retrenchment, I offer thanks for the staunch support and sustenance that the Libraries' friends, supporters, and advisors have offered through the years. I assure you that the very real greatness of the Stanford Libraries' collections, staff, and services has been achieved by the generosity of many in augmenting campus baseline support. That baseline support, as you are probably aware, has been sharply curtailed, due to the current economic downturn, and will remain seriously inadequate for at least the next two budget years. We turn to our supporters to find ways to sustain our services and collection building. We look to you, our users and friends, for advice and direction. Your assistance is vital; as we look to implement further innovations, we need more advice, input and perspective. Many of you know members of the Libraries' staff well. I ask you to call or write them now to share your thoughts and ideas, to remind them their work is important and appreciated, to express your support, and if possible, to discuss a gift – of any amount, kind, purpose, or timing – to the Stanford Libraries. With thanks, Michael A. Keller The Ida M. Green University Librarian |
