New viewer released for image content in the Stanford Digital Repository
We're pleased to announce that we have just released a new viewer into production for all image content in the Stanford Digital Repository (SDR). At this time the upgraded viewer, which leverages Mirador 3, supports all image file format types, while audio, video, 3D and PDF files are still delivered using the existing viewer.
This represents a significant change--and an enhancement--to how users access Stanford Libraries digital content. We've created a short video tutorial to demonstrate the navigation basics of the new viewer. Please take the time to view the tutorial as it will answer many of your questions.
IMPORTANT NOTE: If you do not see the new viewer right away, we recommend you start a new browser session, or clear your browser's cache to see the new viewer.
Users will see this change reflected for all images in the SDR via the PURL (Persistent URL page), and for any SDR images published in SearchWorks and/or in Spotlight at Stanford, as well as images embedded in library.stanford.edu pages or other desktop publishing environments.
The upgrade of SUL's viewer to integrate Mirador 3 is an essential improvement to how we provide access to SDR content, while maintaining current viewer functionality. Mirador integration allows us to more easily address features desired by Stanford, because we can leverage its plugin-rich environment. Mirador also has more modern release practices, enabling us to upgrade and release the viewer with greater confidence. Mirador is an open-source, IIIF-compatible image viewer supported by a robust international community of developers, in which Stanford Libraries is a key leader and contributor.
The integration of Mirador 3 in the new viewer has also allowed us to greatly improve the user experience for content search. You will see the changes reflected on content search-enabled content in the SDR, alongside improvements to the search experience within Spotlight at Stanford for this category of content. Very shortly, we'll publish a follow-up blog post focused specifically on content search. We'll include a video to demonstrate the changes, and we'll also update the existing demo content search exhibit in Spotlight with the new information.
