Michael Ignatieff Presidential Lecture: "On Partisanship: Enemies and Adversaries in Politics"

On October 15, 2012, at 6:00 p.m., Michael Ignatieff will give the 2012-2013 Stanford Presidential Lecture in the Humanities and Arts: "On Partisanship: Enemies and Adversaries in Politics."  The lecture will be held in the Stanford Humanities Center.

In preparation for this event, Matthew Marostica, Curator for Political Science and Economics in the Stanford University Libraries, has written an introductory essay about Ignatieff's remarkable work and career, including a rich annotated bibliography and set of excerpts from Ignatieff's writings.

Ignatieff is the former Leader of Liberal Party of Canada, and currently a Professor in the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto. One of the few political thinkers to have actually led a political party, Ignatieff will bring theory and practice together to talk about how to save politics from itself, and what we need to do in order to recover civility and compromise in our political discourse. 

The Ignatieff Presidential Lecture website is the latest effort in a 14-year collaboration between the Stanford Libraries and the Stanford Humanities Center to create online scholarly resources in support of the Presidential Lecture series.  Not only will this site help to prepare the Stanford community for what promises to be an exhilirating lecture: it will also remain as a resource to those inspired by the lecture to immerse themselves more deeply in Ignatieff's work.

The Stanford Presidential Lecture Series is sponsored by the Office of the President to "bring the most distinguished scholars, artists, and critics of our time to the Stanford University campus for lectures, seminars, panel discussions, and a variety of related interactions with faculty, students, and the community at large."  The Series is administered by the Humanities Center.
