A selection of images from the Anderson photograph collection of the YWCA in China, 1920s-1940s, held by the Special Collection of the Stanford East Asia Library, has been digitized and is now available online.

Donation of Sichuan local gazetteers

The East Asia Library has received a donation of more than 40 local gazetteers from the Sichuan Provincial Local Gazetteer Commission 四川省地方志编纂委员会. These contemporary local gazetteers cover a variety of subject areas from politics, economics, education, finance, commerce, industries to geography, media, publishing and earthquakes, etc. They are useful resources for studies of contemporary Sichuan.

Exhibition: Humanitarian assistance for North Korea

The East Asia Library is having an exhibition of photos and selective books related to humanitarian assistance for North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea). The photos were taken by Ms. Katharina Zellweger, 2011-2012 Pantech Fellow in Korean Studies at the Walter H. Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center. She lived in Pyongyang for five years and served as the North Korea country director for the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).


Trial access to Maisaku, maisaku : Mainichi shinbun no dēta bēsu

The East Asia Library currently has trial access to Maisaku, maisaku : Mainichi shinbun no dēta bēsu (每索, マイサク : 每日新聞のデータベース), which includes Mainichi shinbun 1872 to the present: image format from 1872-1999, along with the English edition: the Mainichi Daily News, both searchable by article, keyword, subject category, and issue. Also includes results of public opinion poll by Mainichi shinbun (1945- ), newspaper articles of major incidents in 20th century and history of Mainichi Shinbunsha. Updated daily.

The Stanford East Asia Library is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Regan Murphy Kao, who will join us on March 20, 2012, as the Japanese Studies Librarian.


Welcome New Japanese Studies Librarian Dr. Regan Murphy Kao

The Stanford East Asia Library is pleased to announce the hiring of Dr. Regan Murphy Kao, who will join us on March 20, 2012, as the Japanese Studies Librarian.

Regan received her Ph.D. in Japanese Religious Studies from Harvard University. She comes to Stanford from the University of California-Berkeley where she was a post-doc from 2010-11 and then a research fellow. Dr. Kao's scholarly specialty is early Japanese Buddhism, and her addition to our staff will strengthen our ability to build the collection and serve Stanford faculty and students in the Japanese studies area.
