The SDR is Stanford Libraries’ open access repository solution for scholarly content of enduring value. We provide services that make digital information resources available for generations of future scholars.
Faculty, researchers, students and others across the Stanford community are turning to the SDR for the stewardship of their scholarly content.
Administrative controls enable depositors to specify content licenses, control content release through embargo, and manage public access levels for finding, viewing and downloading content. The SDR supports world-access or Stanford-only access; access is controlled using strict authentication policies and enterprise-level security mechanisms.
Metadata describing the content is indexed for search and discovery in SearchWorks, and copies of ingested content are provided via persistent URLs (PURLs) to authorized users. The PURL itself is based on a unique SDR identifier, serving up a reliable, long-lived citation link.
In production since 2005, the SDR currently manages over 1 petabyte of unique content (4.9 million digital objects) using an open source distributed storage system and cloud services. Each digital object in SDR is stored redundantly in geo-diverse locations and audited systematically to ensure bit-level preservation.
A wide variety of content types are represented in the SDR: articles, books, data, software, theses, dissertations, reports, manuscripts, maps, photographs, oral histories, music, video, web sites, 3D objects, and so forth.
With a supporting team of thirty -- including service managers, metadata specialists, preservation experts, software engineers, and system administrators -- the SDR plays a vital role in the services, functions, and daily operations of the Stanford Libraries and the Stanford community more broadly.
