Service Profile
The Stanford Digital Repository (SDR) offers streaming services for digital video and audio recordings of all kinds, such as podcasts, interviews, raw footage, documentary productions, lectures, performances, conferences, awards ceremonies, and other events or meetings.
Because the SDR is a centralized, long-term home for digital content of historic or scholarly value to the Stanford community, your media stands to have a long and useful life as it is maintained in the SDR alongside the Libraries’ collections and University Archives.
You provide the media files and associated descriptive information, and the SDR team will process and ingest the material into the repository for streaming and archiving. We can advise on selecting, organizing, and preparing the files from your project or event for the process.
Features
- Access control - A number of streaming access levels are possible: World, Stanford only, or selected in-library locations. Download of files can be enabled or disabled.
- Embeddable player - Like all content in the SDR, media content can be embedded in another web page with a simple cut-and-paste of code.
- Current streaming technology - The SDR uses HLS and MPEG-DASH (via Media Source Extension) streaming protocols with our integrated Wowza Streaming Engine server. We deliver H.264 video and M4A (AAC) audio.
- Broad browser and Device Support - Media streaming is compatible across mobile platforms, and browsers known to be used widely by the Stanford community.
- Related Content - You can include related material, such as transcripts and images, to be available for download access. These files are directly available in the player's file panel.
- Captions - We are actively evaluating transcription services and captiioning workflows, with the goal of supporting full-text search and caption display for enhanced access and ease of use.
- File Encoding and Description - Our staff has published guidelines for preparing media files for both archiving, to ensure optimal preservation of the content, and for describing the material so it is broadly discoverable online.
- Preservation and Persistent Access - Deposit in the SDR assures that the content is preserved and available from a persistent URL (PURL) using trusted library technology and digital preservation practices.

Requirements
A signed release permitting the online publishing of any video or audio recording that includes an individual’s image or voice is required of the individual.
Data security
The SDR allows deposit of low risk and medium risk information as defined by the Information Security Office. All deposits to the SDR are subject to the Terms of Deposit.
Rates
Depending on the volume of media to be processed and ingested, some fees may apply.
